Apple Country South Tyrol
With its 18.400 hectares is the apple-growing area in South Tyrol the largest, continues in the EU. The area stretches along the 46th parallel and is approx. 100 km long, extending from Salurn in the Etschtal Valley (200 m above sea level) to Kortsch and Mals in the Vinschgau District (1.000 m above sea level). With approx. 8.000 family-run apple-growing companies, the structures here a small-scale. The average orchard size is 2.5 to 3 hectares. Fruits are grown on around 2.5 percent of South Tyrol’s entire area. The 1 million tons of apples annually harvested in South Tyrol are, depending on the year, 10 – 12% of the entire apple production in the EU!
